This is part two in a five part series on the weight classes in the UFC. Here's a look at the Welterweights.
The Welterweight division has some of the most star-studded fighters in the UFC. The division is starting to experience some parity. Matt Hughes has had a death grip on the Welterweight division for years now. He has defeated every foe that has stepped in his path and still remains one of the most feared competitors in the Octagon. According to some sources, Hughes will be facing new UFC Welterweight champ, Matt Serra, in the near future.
Matt Serra- UFC Welterweight Champ Serra shocked the world when he defeated Georges St. Pierre at UFC 69, earlier this month to win the Welterweight title. Prior to that, he defeated Chris Lytle to win The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season four in the Welterweight category, giving him that title match with St. Pierre. Serra has been around Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) for quite sometime. He has his own Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym in New York state. With Hughes being his next likely opponent, chances of winning are slim for Serra. But he should be hanging around the UFC for awhile.
Karo Parisyan- New Hotness Parisyan is without a doubt one of the most exciting Welterweights in the UFC. He’s making a name for himself in a division with such names as St. Pierre, Hughes and Diego Sanchez. Unfortunately for Parisyan, he has losses against such opponents as St. Pierre, Sanchez and Sean Sherk. He does have wins over Drew Fickett, Matt Serra and Nick Diaz. Parisyan will face Josh Burkman at UFC 71.
Josh Koscheck- Up and comer Koscheck is riding high after his decision victory over “The Nightmare” Diego Sanchez at UFC 69, earlier this month. With that victory, Koscheck, an alumni of the season one TUF show, has been working his way up the Welterweight ladder in the UFC. He has become a popular fighter for the UFC to use at many Fight Night’s. UFC 69 was Koscheck’s first Pay-Per-View event in the UFC. No doubt about it, he left a good impression on the matchmakers. The former National Champion wrestler is 11-1 in his MMA career. His win over Sanchez certainly puts him in position to get a Welterweight title shot. He also has an opportunity to face St. Pierre. Who knows maybe he’ll get a rematch with Sanchez. If so hopefully it will be more exciting. Last year, it was a division with Hughes and St. Pierre. Now it’s a division with Serra, Sanchez, Koscheck, Parisyan and so many more. Make sure to look for part three of the series, UFC Weight Class: Middleweights, to come out soon.
