Your child can benefit from learning martial arts as they learn the physical components, in addition to the mental and emotional lessons it has to offer.

Kids have several opportunities to participate in team sports throughout the year where often only a few excel and others are benched. Finding an alternative activity for your child, such as martial arts, could be beneficial for your child.

Is Your Child Ready for a Martial Arts Class?

Age is important when considering if a martial arts class will suit your child. If your child is able to work independently in a classroom setting, the timing may be right to enroll your child in a class. Be sure to search out a school that meets your goals. One way to do this successfully is to take advantage of a free trial membership if the school offers one. Also be sure to check out the instructor’s qualifications and the facility where the class will be held to ensure a positive experience. Both boys and girls can benefit from classes in martial arts.

Research Types of Classes

There are many styles of martial arts such as Karate, Aikido, Jujitsu, Taekwondo, and Kung fu. Some are more appropriate for younger children than others. Be sure to do your research on techniques and methods, as some require more contact and competition than you or your child may be comfortable with. In some cases, there may be parent/child classes offered. This can be a fun way to learn a new skill with your child.

Benefits of Martial Arts in Children

Some of the positive aspects kids receive from participating in a martial arts class include the following:

Discipline. The repetition, details, rhythms, rules, and protocols that are emphasized during class can all aid in the child’s self discipline.

Self Confidence. While a child is learning how to restrain an opponent and protect himself, he is also building self confidence in his skill.

Fitness. Martial arts definitely keeps kids active in a fun environment and builds their coordination and overall fitness level, which will benefit them as they participate in other activities. It is also an activity for kids that is year round versus seasonal and works well for those needing more structure.

Self Motivation. Kids can track their individual progress and success as they work up to different levels. Many forms of martial arts have colored belts to mark that progression. Kids often want to work to the next level. They work for their own merits while developing awareness that they are responsible for their actions.

Martial arts classes can help kids focus on their mind and body while learning to respect their strength and technique. These are skills that can be used for a lifetime on a daily basis.
