Is Combat Good for Mental and Physical Health

There are thousands of Martial Arts styles around the world. Practicing them has a variety of benefits.

Those people that choose to spend time training in the Martial Arts will experience gains in self-confidence, physical fitness as well as mental strength and discipline. But what is it about training for combat that leads to improvement? Why is it that increasing strength, determination and focus makes for happier, more productive people? There are, of course, varying opinions on why it is that people feel better when engaging in training related to violence.

Self-Defense and Confidence

Societies around the world have been practicing Martial Arts as an avenue toward self-improvement for centuries. In cultures past, it was important to practice Martial Arts as a form of self-defense, as there were many sources of danger, and the ability to do defend oneself physically could save lives.

As our societies have advanced, there is no longer so much of a need for defense, but violence is still discussed and focused upon. Because of this, the ability to defend ourselves is, quite rightly, associated with strength and power. Therefore, it becomes logical that learning to defend oneself improves self-esteem.

Fitness and Martial Arts

It is well documented that a healthier lifestyle will lead to improvements in mood. With more exercise, human beings feel less hampered by their bodies, leading to feelings of happiness. As with the confidence relating to self-defense, fitness and exercise breeds feelings of strength within the individual.

Martial Arts, especially those that train vigorously (such as Karate, JuJitsu and TaeKwonDo) will be a great opportunity to push the body's limits and improve fitness. As most Martial Arts as full-body activities, they will improve flexibility, muscles strength and coordination in every area of the body. This, of course, leads to feelings of strength in the individual.

The Martial Arts Mindset

Finally, practitioners of the Martial Arts will likely makes gains relating to their mental state. The reason for this is quite simple. Training for combat is a challenging prospect. There will be many times in which the individual doubts their ability and needs to draw upon inner-strength to make it through a test or to win a bout. The ability to draw upon resources one didn't know one had is important and ensures that the Martial Artist has a strong will. This is reflected in all aspects of one's life.

Many Martial Artists will go through their entire careers without truly analyzing why it is they gain from their activity. This is an essential activity as it will help people to understand their motivations for training as well as how best to achieve their goals related to the Martial Art they practice.
