Gina Carano's Next Fight

Will it be a Rematch with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos?

Nov 10, 2009 Eric Streler

A lot of speculation surrounds when Gina Carano will fight next after her loss to Cristiane Santos a few months ago. Expect to see Carano back and better than ever.

The question remains of when Gina Carano's next fight will be. As of now, no one really knows. She has kept pretty quite since her defeat this past August. There are some possibilities out there including a rematch with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.

Possible Fights for Gina Carano

There are not a lot of fights for Gina Carano that are very enticing. The sport of MMA for women needs to evolve a little more, allowing more female fighters to make a name for themselves before there is really anything out there for Carano. The only fight that would raise anyone's eyebrows is a rematch with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. However there are some options available for Carano.

  1. A Rematch with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos - A rematch with Santos is needed. Santos defeated Carano with one second remaining in the first round in what many people feel should have went to the second round. The referee stopped the fight 4:59 into the first round. Most referees would allow the fight to go into the next round in this situaiton. Nonetheless, Santos got the TKO and became Strikeforce's inagrual Womens Lightweight Champion. She definitely deserved it. Both of these fighters seem to be in a league of their own compared to the other closely ranked women fighters. This rematch would be a big ratings hit and would allow Carano a chance at redemption and Santos a chance to prove her win was no fluke and that she is the womens MMA premier fighter. This fight makes the most sense for both fighters.
  2. A Showdown with Erin Toughill- This would actually be a really good fight even though many people don't know of Erin Toughill. Toughill is a very talented fighter who is ranked sixth in the first ever WAMMA (World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts) womens rankings in March of 2009. Toughill has won ten of her last eleven fights with her only loss coming in a disqualification. This would be a matchup of two very talented women and would allow Carano to add an impressive win to her resume if she were to win.
  3. Fighting in the UFC - This is the least likely of the three scenarios at the moment. The reason is that there are currently no women UFC fighters. The UFC has not ventured into allowing women to fight for them yet. The main reasons are the lack of female fighters and the negative connotations that come with it. The UFC has a tough enough time dealing with their public perception as it is. Many people still think that MMA fighting is unsafe and should not be allowed. Putting women in this type of position would just cause further damage at this point. Don't count out seeing Carano as the first ever woman UFC fighter. She is great for publicity and if they were to sign a few women fighters, she would definitely be one of them. It is likely that this will happen over the next five years, but it probably won't be where Carano fights her next bout.

Whatever route Carano takes needs to be well calculated. She has a lot of doubters, but she is still considered one of the top women MMA fighters along with Santos. A win in her next fight would erase a lot of these doubts. If her next fight is not with Santos, a win would make a rematch with Santos nearly inevitable. Despite the first loss of her career, the potential and opportunities for Carano still look very bright.
